Message d’Isabelle Barber, petite-fille d’Henri Fluchère (1898-1987)

Message lu par Margaret Jone-Davies lors du Congrès annuel de la SFS en 2025:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I was delighted to be asked to send you best wishes on this special occasion of the 50th anniversary of the French Shakespeare Society.

Fifty years ago, my grandfather, a devoted scholar and passionate lover of Shakespeare’s work, helped found this society. For him Shakespeare was not just a playwright. He was a lifelong companion, an enigma to puzzle over, a poet to translate with care, and a mirror held up to human nature.

He took immense delight in delving deep into the texts, uncovering hidden  meanings, wrestling with ambiguities, and bringing the Bard’s words to life in another language. He believed that translation was not merely about converting words, but also about conveying soul. It was through this conviction that he helped build a community of scholars, readers, and performers who have, over the decades, carried that flame forward.

Today, as we celebrate fifty years of this remarkable journey, I know he would be deeply moved – though likely quoting “What’s past is prologue”, reminding us that the real story is still unfolding.

To all of you who continue the work he loved so dearly, thank you. To my grandfather: your passion endures, your voice echoes still.

Here’s to the next fifty years!

Isabelle Barber
